Paddle Canada Touring SUP Skills Level 1 Certification

Embark on unforgettable multi-day SUP adventures! Our Paddle Canada Touring SUP Skills certification is designed for experienced paddlers seeking to enhance their skills and explore beyond the limits of day trips. This comprehensive course will equip you with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to plan and execute safe and enjoyable multi-day paddling expeditions. This course is a prerequisite for our Fly Fishing Granite Falls multi day experience.

In this course we'll paddle to Granite Falls the morning of Friday May 23rd, learning and practicing new skills on the way. At the campsite you will be introduced to trip planning, navigation, touring communication, and remote camping. Of course, you will always eat well on our courses and tours. The class includes one evening meal and one lunch.

Who is this Course For?

This course is ideal for paddlers who:

  • Have a strong foundation in SUP skills, including completion of the Paddle Canada Advanced SUP Skills course or equivalent.

  • Desire to explore the coast on multi-day paddling adventures.

  • Are interested in improving their navigation, planning, and safety skills for extended trips.

  • Want to enhance their paddling skills for challenging conditions.

What You'll Learn:

This comprehensive course covers a wide range of advanced paddling skills and safety techniques, including:

  • Navigation & Planning: Learn basic navigation techniques, including route planning using charts, and GPS devices. Learn to understand weather forecasts, tides, and current predictions to plan safe and successful trips. You will be introduced to factoring in wind, weather, and tides when planning routes.

  • Safety & Risk Management: Develop safety plans, including risk assessment for various paddling environments, and emergency procedures (communication, signaling, and what to carry for basic first aid). Learn how to identify and mitigate potential hazards on multi-day trips.

  • Camping & Wilderness Skills: Learn essential camping and wilderness survival skills relevant to coastal environments, including campsite selection (considering tides, wind, and water access), fire safety (including safe fire building practices), Leave No Trace principles, food storage and preparation, and bear safety.

  • Paddling Techniques: Refine your paddling skills for extended distances and challenging conditions, including efficient forward stroke techniques (to minimize fatigue), paddling in wind and waves (including bracing and directional control), paddling with a loaded board, and efficient group paddling techniques.

  • Equipment & Gear: Learn how to select and pack appropriate gear for multi-day trips, including clothing systems for varying weather conditions, food and water considerations, camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, stoves), and necessary safety and repair equipment. Understand the pros and cons of different types of touring SUPs and gear.

    • Instructor Information:

      This lesson is run by Drew Climie, an experienced and certified instructor who is passionate about sharing his love of paddling and getting outdoors. You will find him to be patient, knowledgeable, and dedicated to providing a safe and enjoyable learning experience for all skill levels.

      Prerequisites:
    • Completion of the Paddle Canada Advanced SUP Skills course or equivalent.

    • Prior paddling experience in challenging conditions is recommended.

      Equipment:
    • Participants are responsible for bringing their own touring-style SUP, appropriate exposure gear, overnight camping gear, and meal prep gear.
